International Women's Day 2009

International Women's Day is all about celebrating inspirational women all around the world.

I was mainly going to waffle on about the dear old mumborg, god love her. As she is by far the biggest inspiration in my life. Married for nearly 30 years, three wonderful children (one of them is me! haha)and two gorgeous nephews. The mumborg happily gave up a career in nursing to be a mum, I am not sure if she planned to ever go back to nursing. That decision has taken out of her hands when she had a brain tumour, which then led to the million and one complications that she has now. I could go on and on, but I wont today.

For those that read this blog regularly, you know that I am studying to be a counsellor/therapist. This has opened my eyes, mind and heart to many aspects of the human condition that I had only paid the briefest of attention too beforehand, from the affects of phobias and depression to the damage caused by the many forms of abuse. The women in my class, fellow students and tutors are a big inspiration to me. You have to share a lot in class, probably more so than in any other other educational setting. It is at times scary, terrifying, ruddy awful, but mostly its inspirational, uplifting and challenging. Which is of course, just what we ask our clients to do to and they in turn inspire with the stories of their lives.

One of our class mates celebrated her 40th birthday and I took upon the task of picking out a birthday present from the class. After much searching for the perfect thing, I stumbled upon a necklace. It was a bohemian styled necklace, with a old key and charms. It also had the words 'Be the change' embossed on a little copper tag. As soon as I read that, I knew I had found the perfect necklace. Not only is she the mistress of change in her life, she is also inspiring change in others. So, might I add, are all my other class mates and tutors with their various work on placements and in class.

On reading a bit about International Women's Day, I stumbled upon a theme that stuck in my mind, Its Women and men united to end violence against women and girls . Having recently covered Domestic Violence in class, this topic is fresh in my mind. Also a few of my class mates work for an organistaion called Women's Aid , so I would like to dedicate this post to that organisation and they great work they do. Not only only in helping women to saftey, but also offering hope that you can change your life for the better.
“Be the change you want to see in the world.”

  1. "Be the change". I like that a lot. It's not easy, but I believe if we all put our minds to it we can at least try, if only in a small way. We can't all be great leaders, but we can play our individual parts.

  2. You made my blog life simple today. I just told everyone to come here and read what they needed to hear. This is the way I lost my mother. That kind of loss should never be felt by any child, and it should never be passed along to the next generation.

    Be The Change.

  6. This puts me in mind of one of my favorite Ethics theories--Moira, or the belief that everything has its proper time and place--not because of fate, but because with experience comes the knowledge that humanity is the catalyst that drives life down each individual's path. I've always liked that, and it seemed so much more honest than anything else. We are the choice behind every action, nothing else has that power.

Wonderful post (and see, I'm so behind what's going on that I was confused about the female sign that kept popping up on Yahoo! Go figure).

  7. Nice post, Claire. You should really include yourself in your list of inspirational women - nothing wrong with being inspired by your own actions!

Your training to become a therapist, your wonderful doodles, your dedication to the mumborg in her time of need, and not to mention your promotion of blood donation... are all wonderful!

As you know, domestic violence is a topic rather close to my heart. So, yay to you for drawing attention to the issue.

I've said it before, but honestly, there's not enough focus on the after-effects of domestic violence. A lot of the messages out there are 'íts a bad thing, don't do it'. But not many of them talk about the resulting depression, panic attacks and even post traumatic stress. And many others.

The more people talk about this issue, hopefully those women who are abused will feel like that have support out there in the world from people who can understand. :)

  9. First off, your Mum is an inspiration to us all as even though we don't know her personally, we are inspired by her fighting spirit that you relay to us. She deserves a break, hopefully she'll get one soon!

As for you, you have chosen a very tough career to pursue as counseling is definitely not an exact science and is going to differ with every single person that you see. You, however, will do an excellent job with it I have no doubt.

I have a cousin who found herself in two abusive relationships and she was finally able to break free of them but for the longest time she put up with these men abusing her both physically and emotionally. I never understood why she put up with it but I'm sure it had something to do with her father dieing at an early age.

I'm glad, though, that she eventually could "be the change" that she needed to become the person she is today. It isn't easy but it can be done!

  14. I love your attitude. You have so much on your plate right now with mumborg and school and you still manage to write an article about caring for others and changing the world by changing yourself. That is wonderful. I want to steal some of your positive energy. Thanks.

  16. Well, you and mum have certainly inspired me! You wrote a wonderful post here.
We put on our masks and leave our houses, meeting folks who also have their masks on. We never really know what's going on with our friends because we keep up illusions.

I feel so bad for the women in Muslim counties with Shiria (sp) law; the ones who are stoned to death if they so much as make a minor "mistake." I wish we could reach out to more of them.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and mum. You're both fighters and I just have to believe that you'll win!
    ~~~Blessings~~~
