Counselling Homework, Task Three

Hello, well my task three is a bit difficult for you at home to do, as i have all the handouts.
It is focoused on the BACP, which is the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy - Ethical framework for Good Practice.
Basically this is rules and regulations for counsellors and those doing counselling courses.
Before you all run to hills thinking 'Boring!'. You dont have to play along on this, just read along!

TASK THREE
Working in groups of two or three locate the BACP website and each download a copy of the
BACP FRAMEWORK FOR ETHICS AND GOOD PRACTICE
Discuss and answer the following questions….

WHAT DOES BACP STAND FOR?
British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE BACP FRAMEWORK FOR ETHICS AND GOOD PRACTICE?
Ethics for counselling and psychotherapy unifies and replaces all the earlier codes for counsellors/ trainers and supervisors.
CHOOSE THREE ‘VALUES OF COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY’ AND GIVE A DEFINITION OF EACH
Appreciating the variety of human experience and culture: When counselling you will come across people of many different religions, races, sexuality, disabilities (mental and physical).
Striving for the fair and adequate provision of counselling and psychotherapy: this means making sure that everyone has access to counselling, regardless of sex, race, disability etc. This can be achieved by providing counsellors of both sexes, counselling information in different languages and Braille, disabled access to building where counselling is held.
Increasing personal effectiveness: You will be more effective as a counsellor if you are self aware about your own limits professionally and personally. Also regular supervision and a good personal life will make you a better more effective counsellor

GIVE A BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE MEANING OF THE FOLLOWING ETHICAL PRINCIPLES OF COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY
FIDELITY: Honouring the trust placed in the practitioner, trustworthy, restricts disclosure of confidential information about the client.
AUTOMONY: Respect for the clients right to be self-governing, voluntary participant, respect your client, accurate advertising.
BENEFICENCE: A commitment to promoting the clients well being, clients best interests, work within your own limits (training)> refer client on.
NON-MALEFIECENCE: A commitment to avoiding harm to client: avoid sexual, financial, emotional, exploitation, challenge, incompetence or malpractice of others. Personal responsibility if feeling emotional/ill in your own life not to offer counselling.
JUSTICE: The fair and impartial treatment of all clients and the provision of adequate services. Alert to conflict between legal and ethical obligations.
SELF-RESPECT: Fostering the practitioners self knowledge and care for self.

WHAT ARE THE TEN PERSONAL QUALITIES LISTED IN THE FRAMEWORK?
EMPATHY HUMILITY
SINCERITY COMPETENCE
INTEGRITY FAIRNESS
RESILIENCE WISDOM
RESPECT COURAGE

CHOOSE TWO OF THESE QUALITIES THAT YOU THINK ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT AND SAY WHY?

Empathy: I think empathy is one of the most important qualities a counsellor can have. The ability to think and feel what the client is going through without thinking about yourself and how you would feel, is invaluable to understanding and helping the client.
Sincerity: I think sincerity is an important quality to have as a counsellor. The client needs to know that you really have their best interests at heart, and are really sincere in what you say.

HOW DOES THE BACP FRAMEWORK APPROACH THE ISSUES OF DIFFERENCE AND DIVERSITY?
Justice- A commitment to fairness requires the ability to appreciate differences between people and to be committed to equality of opportunity, and avoiding discrimination against people or groups contrary to their legitimate personal or social characteristics.

WHAT DOES THE BACP FRAMEWORK SAY ABOUT CONFIDENTIALITY?
Fidelity- The obligation of the practitioner to restrict disclosure of confidential information about the client.

WHAT DOES THE BACP FRAMEWORK SAY ABOUT SUPERVISION?
Beneficence- A commitment to promoting the clients well being, clients best interests, work within your own limits (training)> refer client on. Supervision comes under working within your own limits.

  1. That is hard, but I think I choose Integrity and Fairness for if you don't have honesty the others don't mean much and fairness because I would try to see the other persons point of view although I might not agree with them and because I value honest I would tell that I did not agree.

  3. I find it very difficult to choose just two. All are important, and a counselor lacking in any of them would be less effective.

  4. Hello tomcat, i also found it very difficult to choose just two! I had to go with empathy because i personally believe that is one of the most important things, but i really struggled picking another one over the other choices.
    cheers
