Adding layers to life

Heather and Jessica edited with lightroom and enhanced with layers
Still on my quest to edit all my sisters wedding photographs, hopefully soon I shall be finished. Luckily she loves me and knows I can still lock her in a cupboard if she annoys me about it. To be fair, she hasn't moaned once about it and has loved the ones I have shown her so far. I just want them to be edited to the best of my abilities and for her to have some lovely photographic memories.
It is a steep steep learning curve, not only taking the photographs, but also the editing. I keep adding new things to my box of tricks, which of course adds on more work, but it is still fun! There is so much to learn and once you make the dreaded mistake of looking at other people photographs, you are doomed.
Heather on the way to the church, edited in lightroom and enhanced with layers
At the moment I am using Lightroom 3 to edit the photographs and then using Picnik.com to add some finsishing touches.
Lightroom Trick - Look into the world of presets! Magical stuff that creates all sorts of cool effects that you can then further tweak.
Picnik.com Trick - If you are premium user you can add 'Layers/textures'. You can also do this using other programs, but I can only do it using Picnik for now!

Wedding Car edited using Lightroom and enhanced with presets
Next time I update the blog about the wedding photography, hopefully I will have bloody finished, but probably not. Let me know what you think and if you have any favourite photograph editing tricks or tips be sure to let me know them.

  1. You're doing such a great job with all of them. I'm so happy that you're discovering a new aspect of yourself that you didn't know was there before.

    I really like what you're doing with all of them. Keep us posted, please!

  2. I like the first photo but I absoutely adore the wedding car ones - Super COOL!

  3. The second one, with the words on the rearview window, is my favorite. Absolutely beautiful and creative! Great job!

  4. All are beautiful ( but..could you cover the number of car with something .. I think, if's the real one?)

    Thank you so much for this post and also for the links .. Each time I find interesting things to learn from you. That's why BC'ers love your style and me hate you so much. :) ))

    The best in your life, gal!

  5. #1 #3 I feel area excellent! Very well done.

    #2 I have been looking at for a few minutes and still can't figure out if I like it or not.

    I like the idea here, words overlayed on a pic.

    Not sure I like the subject being the words though.

    Hmmmm, any chance you have a version with words not so bold?

    Or, a layer above and below the back window, that may eliminate the "fog" over the smiling bride.

  6. Interesting how your pictures always have a more classic look, like those taken in the 40s and 50s, only with a certain modern twist. Can't say which is my favorite, they're all quite distinctive. I think #2 is quite unique.

  7. Gorgeous work!!! I love them! Hope you enjoyed it. Wedding photography is a lot of fun. :)

  8. I'm with @Tough Cooky Mommy. The "Rear Window" shot. It's classic and original at the same time. You have real style. I'm the world's worst with a camera, and I'd run out of ideas after three shots. I love seeing how others see things, getting other perspectives. I'll look forward to seeing more.

  9. I am enjoying seeing these metamorphose. The 3rd one is my favourite. In the movie, The Sting, between each scene, they put up a still photograph in an oval frame and some words for the next scene. Picture 3 reminds me of this. As if it should say underneath 'The Wheels'.
    One day, whenever i have some free time, i am going to play with some of these programmes you recommend and see what i can do with my own photographs. Thank you for sharing them.

  10. Hi Claire, You're doing a great job with those photos. I know exactly what you mean about travelling along the learning curve with new software. Sure, you can do some of the simple stuff right away, but it takes time to learn how to use all of the tools for effective tweeking. When I switched to Sony Vegas for my video editing, it took a while to learn how to get the most out of the software. Heck, I'm still learning. :)

    Good luck with completing your project Ray

  11. @Phoenix: I had not realised that editing photographs could be so much fun and so complicated. Wedding photography is whole new ballgame, as it is such an important event in peoples lives. Thank god I started the 365 project, even though I never finished it. It was invaluable practice!

    @TimeThief, Thanks for commenting, I am finding what people like the most very interesting!

    @Tough Cookie Mommy: Thanks for such a lovely compliment! This input is invaluable and I can apply it to the next batch I edit :)

    @Dyeve
    , It's okay the license plate can't be traced back to anyone related to me, thanks for mentioning that though.

    I don't think people love me and you shouldn't hate me :( :( hehe.

    @Hank, It is very interesting that you favour 1/3 and not 2! Number 2 is not actually a strong picture on its own, that is why I was free to add so many things to it. Heather's expression was so nice in that picture though, that I wanted to do something special with that photo.

    I might have another play with it and see what else I can do with it! Thanks for the input, much appreciated.

    @Nothing Profound, I always love reading what you think about my photographs. The style and elegance of the 40's and 50's really appeals to me and Heather's dress was a faux vintage one. Another vote for number 2, I shall have to ask Heather which is her favourite and why.

    @Antonia, Hey Antonia, Thanks so much for the compliment! I enjoyed most aspects of taking the photographs, not the stress though! It was my first ever wedding, my little sister getting married and using camera equipment I hadn't practised with! I am loving the editing though, even though it is a slow, slow process for me.

    @Pacific Melody
    , Another read window fan, it seems that is proving quite the favourite. I think luck had a lot to do with it and having a sister that loves getting her photograph took. Which you will see when I am allowed to blog about all the photographs, all seventy bajillion of them. As with anything, practice makes perfect! I had the motivation of it being my little sisters wedding to keep me going.

    @Juliana, Hmm I am trying to remember if I have seen that movie? I definitely need to, it sounds cool! I would love to see what you do with your photographs. I think you would have a LOT of fun with it.

    @Ray
    , Hey Ray, I don't know whether you are the same, but I am awful at reading instructions and manuals. If I took the time to read them, I am sure I could speed up the learning process, but they never seem to write the things in a language I can understand.

    Thanks for commenting and good luck with your video editing!

  13. @Tricia, Thanks ever so much. I am loving the retro vibe with the editing, it is good my sister does too.

  15. Hi Claire!

    Like you I'm doing a lot of experimenting with a very difficult software, Photoshop. It is a powerful tool which I insist on mastering. (I could be stubborn you know)

    I've done, a few days ago some layering technique on some photos and I think it turned out to be awful. lol They're not publish-worthy at all.

    What you've done with the photos above are great. My favourite is the 3rd one - I love the details of the subject and the exagerrated sharpness.

    Keep up the good work!

  16. Wow, I know none of those people who commented above and usually I can pick out one familiar name!

    Anyhow, all being astounded aside, I've yet to finish Frank and Dawn's pictures myself though I keep telling myself I need to get back to it and finish up. Luckily they haven't been in a big tear to get them but I'm hoping to dedicate one day soon to finishing them up so that I can then get to all of the other pictures that I keep taking and need to do something with. I swear, I need to be put on camera suspension until I get caught up!

  18. I how wish I could be so creative like you! I really, really like your site. I'm impress!

    I'll be visiting here once in a while for sure...^-* ..God bless!

  19. I prefer #2. Very unique. Good job!

  20. @Jazz, Hey thanks so much for that!

    @Funkkee, I am stubborn too, but also make things a lot harder for myself, by not reading tutorials and things like that! I think that is why I am reluctant to get photoshop, as I don't want an awesome program that I would barely know what to do with. I think I might see if there are any night classes I could go to.

    I would love to see some of things you have played with, I have private sets on flickr and some of the stuff I have done is just horrible! But I am keeping it there for now so I can keep a track of my progress.

    @Linda, I have resorted to finding people on the street, dragging them into a cyber cafe and forcing them to comment on my blog, tis a sad affair! haha

    Yeah you need to finish them and stop going on other photograph adventures!

    @Lois... HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

    @Lee Shinyoung, practice makes perfect and all that. I am glad you are impress.

    @Rico, Hey dude thanks for that :) :) You will have to get use to editing photographs for baby albums :)

  21. I had been contemplating signing up for Picnik Pro and after seeing what you have been able to do with it, maybe I'll give it a go. I must have missed it if you said any other photo programs you use. ?? I do a lot of photo editing for my genealogy blog and need all the help I can get! ;)

  22. @Carol, Hey Carol! I do the majority of the editing using Lightroom 3

    Which you can try here for 30 days I think http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshoplightroom/

    I then do the fancy frills stuff using picnik.
